BEFORE you hand over the keys …
Are you CONFIDENT that your new driver has the knowledge and experience to make the RIGHT decisions behind the wheel? Read our Philosophy on Teen Drivers to see if we are the right fit for you and your teen driver.
EXPERIENCE (a minimum of 50 hours behind-the-wheel practice), and TRAINING (a Certified 36 Hour Driver Education Program) play a major role in assuring that a driver’s eyes will look in the right places at the right time. And a knowledge of safe and defensive driving skills will help a driver to make the correct responses when a driving situation does occur!

**Drive-Rite is certified by the Tennessee Department of Safety as DTTP third party testers to give Students the Road/Skills Test. Per State of TN DTTP, no schools will offer knowledge test after 1/15/2018. Sorry for this inconvenience but this is the DTTP’s decision and completely out our hands. You may take the knowledge test at any State of TN Driver Services Center or on-line through their website. Contact TN Dept. of Safety DTTP division to ask any questions. (615) 251-5106. Students must complete classroom Driver Education Classroom requirements prior. Students have 1 year (12 months) from when they start to complete this course, if they intend to participate in the DTTP testing. Students do not need their permit to start Driver Education Class, but it is encouraged. Students may start class prior to 15th (see Hardship License Requirements) birthday but can not actually take the Skills Test until student turns 15 years and 6 months. SF1010 Form (Certificate of Compulsory School Attendance) is not required to take Driver Education at Drive-Rite but the form is required to go to the testing center and take their Permit/Knowledge test. We do encourage students to try for their Permit/Knowledge test as soon as they can after turning 15.

6 Hours Driving (3 – 2 Hour Sessions)
Students are called for their driving lessons in the same order that they finish the classroom requirements. All students receive PRIVATE driving lessons. The Driving Instructor will call Parent(s) to set up driving appointments directly. Lessons are given Mon – Sat. and during the school year we pick students up directly from schools and return them home after the lesson. Student is picked-up and returned for driving lessons providing that the student lives in the Greater Knox or Blount Count area(s). Outside of Blount/Knox County, students meet their Instructor at Drive-Rite Driving School or a pre-determined meeting location. The goal of all lessons is to help the student become a safe driver and improve their skills accordingly. The students’ progression will depend directly on the amount of practice that each student has had with their parents prior to driving with their Drive-Rite Driving Instructor. Each student is at a different place on their driving “learning curve” and driving lessons will be adjusted accordingly with a goal of being safe and Road Test ready in mind.
**Drive-Rite Driving School Driving Instructors are certified by the Tennessee Department of Safety as DTTP third party testers to give Driver Education students the Road/Skills Test at the end of their last driving session, IF the student is ready to take and pass it. Students have 24 weeks (6 months) from when they start to complete this course, if they intend to participate in the DTTP testing. Passing the Road/Skills testing depends again, solely on the amount of practice and experience the student has previously done with his/her parents. Students can NOT gain enough experience to be safe drivers with ONLY the 6 hours of driving that is included with the Driver Education Program! The Dept. of Safety recommends at least 50 hours of practice prior to taking the road test and that responsibility lies with the parent(s).
Any parent who needs extra help can pay for extra driving lessons for any student. Contact the office for more info.

Call your provider to ask. Please be advised that most Insurance Providers that do offer this discount DO require the FULL 36-Hour Driver Education Program for a student to qualify.
**State knowledge (permit) test or State Skills. Per State of TN DTTP, no schools will offer knowledge test after 1/15/2018. Sorry for this inconvenience but this is the DTTP’s decision and completely out our hands. You may take the knowledge test at any State of TN Driver Services Center or on-line through their website.
